Recent Natural Disasters
  • Mudslide and flooding in Hispaniola, Haiti
    -Nine people killed in Haiti and 11,000 people evacuated in Dominican Republic due to flooding and mudslide caused after heavy rainfall in the the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.
    -Hispaniola is a major island in the Caribbean, containing the two sovereign states of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
    -A woman was killed by landslide in Port-au-Prince. Port-au-Prince is the capital and largest city of the Caribbean country of Haiti.
    -About 3,000 homes reported to be flooded in the northern province of Puerto Plata of Dominican Republic.
    -Six killed and at least 700 people were displaced by flooding in Limbe and Anse-a-Foleur area of Haiti two weeks ago.
    -Flooding is a common natural disaster in Haiti after rainfall due to poor drainage system.

  • M 5.5 moderate shallow harmless sea quake Off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra (@ 26 km depth) with epicenter located 329 km SSW of Banda Aceh. People of Meulaboh will have felt weak shaking of MMI III. Five people were killed when M 8.7 massive earthquake hit Sumatra, Indonesia two weeks ago.

  • M 5.1 moderate shallow earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan Region (@ 67 km depth) with epicenter located 54 km NE Mutsu. Weak shaking will have felt by the people of Hakodate, Hakodate, Hachinohe and Aomori, Honshu, Japan.

  • M 4.2 moderate deep earthquake in Tajikistan (@ 165 km depth) with epicenter located 33 km ESE of Khorugh. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have experienced as far as Faizabad (Afghanistan).

  • M 4.4 moderate shallow earthquake in South Western Siberia, Russia (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 9 km NW Saryg-sep. Weak shaking will have flt by the people of  Kaa-khem and Kyzyl.

  • M 3.5 light shallow earthquake in Southern Iran (@ 20 km depth) with epicenter located 60 km N Kongan. Weak shaking will have felt as far as Jahrom and Shiraz.

  • Mexico/Popocatepet recent volcanic activity
    -There is continuous emission of steam and gas with a height of 500 m to 1 km, moving south on the slopes. (Updated 01:10 UTC)
    -The volcanic alert level remains at Phase 3.
    -Popocatepetl, world's most dangerous volcano, is located at an altitude of 5426 meters above sea level.

Flooding List
  • Flooding in Princeton and Kimberley area of Canada
    -Evacuation alerts issued for Princeton and Kimberley area of British Columbia.
    -Forty homes are under the evacuation alert in the Morrison Subdivision.
    -One month ago, following the flooding in Kashechewan and Fort Albany, Ontario, Canada, a state of emergency was declared.

  • Strong winds and sandstorms in Xinjiang Uygur region, China
    -Strong winds and sandstorms forecast in some parts of south Xinjiang Uygur region, central and western parts of Gansu alongwith inner Mongolia and central and northern areas of Ningxia.
    -Gansu province was hit by the biggest sandstorm in 2012 in the beginning of this month.
