According to USGS Pager Map, moderate to light shaking will have felt by the people of Taitung City, Heng-ch'un and Kao-hsiung. Weakshaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of  Yue-ching, Tainan City, Yun-lin, Hualian, Pu-li and T'ai-chung-shih.

 M 5.7 very strong earthquake shakes Taiwan region today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake epicenter was located 52 km SE Taitung and 123 km E Kaohsiung. It was 3.2 miles deep.

The island of Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes. The 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake, the deadliest earthquake in Taiwan's recorded history, killed 3,276 people. Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a state in East Asia

Seismic activity along the boundaries of the Philippine Sea Plate has produced 7 great (M>8.0) earthquakes and 250 large (M>7) events since the beginning of the 20th century. There have also been a number of tsunami-generating events in the region, including the Moro Gulf earthquake noted above, whose tsunami resulted in more than 5000 deaths.
