Recent World Disasters

  • Flooding in Australia (Daily update)

    -Four houses in Nathalia's east have been flooded
    -The SES has warned Narrandera to prepare for evacuation from 9.30am
    -The Murrumbidgee River is due to peak at 9 metres this afternoon. Yesterday Lachlan River system (Forbes) peaked 10.65 metres
    -About 300,000 sandbags have been distributed in NSW
    -For further weather and flood warnings visit Bureau of Meteorology website

    -People of Yoogali, Beelbangera and Bilbul have started returning their home

    Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Michael Gallacher announced Natural Disaster Declarations for a further seven Local Government Areas namely Blayney, Broken Hill, Cabonne, Greater Hume, Narrandera, the Mid-Western Regional Local Government Area, as well as the Unincorporated Area of NSW, which covers much of the Far Western Part of the State.

  • M 6.7 very strong shallow Sea quake in Vanuatu 9@ 32 km depth) with epicenter located 61 km NE of Isangel. About 35,000 people will have felt strong shaking of MMI VI. People in Isangel will have felt strongest jolt. Moderate shaking will have experienced in Port-Vila. Light will have experienced by the people of We and Tadine. Luckily the epicenter is in Sea water and far from populated area. NO MAJOR DAMAGE CONFIRMED. AFTERSHOCKS COMMON

    Based on the earthquake magnitude, location and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts (NOAA West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center)
  • M 5.4 moderate shallow earthquake near the east coast of Honshu, Japan (O-naka, Ibaraki-ken @ 25 km depth) with epicenter located 41 km N from Mito. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt in Hitachi. Weak shaking will have experienced as far as Saitama. Tokai Mura power plant lies just 22 km far from epicenter
    JMA mentions M 5.5 @ 10 km depth in Ibaraki-ken Hokubu region.

Recent Volcanic Activity
  • Alaska/Cleveland recent volcanic activity
    -According to Alaska Volcano Observatory, a small, short duration explosion was detected from Cleveland Volcano on distant seismic stations and infrasound arrays (7:05 PM March 7, AKST)
    -This explosion was similar to recent small events that occurred in December 2011 and produced small ash clouds that dissipated quickly and did not affect air traffic.
    -It remains possible for intermittent, sudden explosions of ash to occur at any time. Ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level may develop 
    -There is no real-time seismic monitoring network on Mount Cleveland. Cleveland webcam is  located on top of High Hill a few miles North of the village of Nikolski on the western end of Umnak Island
  • Kamchatka/Bezymianny recent volcanic activity
    -Aviation color code is lowered to orange (earlier red for Bezymianny volcano)
    -According to Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), the culmination phase of the eruption occurred from 21:27 till 22:10 UTC on March 08, a magnitude of volcanic tremor was 7.52 µm/s at that time
    -At about 00:15 UTC on March 09, probably a new portion of ash began to extending a little to northern to northeast of the volcano. According to satellite data, a length of ash plume was about 434 mi (700 km) at 04:32 UTC on March 09. At present, the moderate eruption is continuing.
    -Activity of the volcano after strong explosive phase of eruption is gradually decreasing but continues. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

Recent Flood Update
  • Flash flood in Islands of Kauai and Oahu, USA
    -17 homes on Oahu and 12 homes on Kauai damaged
    -Numerous roads on Kauai, including the Hanalei River Bridge, remain closed due to landslide
    -Radar continues to show heavy rain falling in thunderstorms over northeastern Kauai near Anahola
    -Runoff from this storm may also cause rock and mudslides in steep terrain

Active Tropical Storm
  • Tropical cyclone Irina
    -Death toll remains at 73
    -21,235 people homeless, a total of 67,911 people affected
    -Most fatalities due to mudslide in Ifanadiana. Click to read detail update report on Irina
    -Irina is currently in Indian Ocean and is heading towards Durban but is forecast to strike just as a tropical depression
  • Tropical cyclone Koji
    -Tropical Cyclone Koji is expected to continue to move steadily toward the west southwest away from the Cocos Islands, Australia. This system will not affect the WA mainland or the Cocos Islands

Other Disasters
  • Following BBC, solar storm in the Earth's magnetic field has passed by the Earth with minimal effects. Some air traffic was re-routed away from polar regions on Wednesday and Thursday, but no large-scale effects of the storm have been reported. The current coronal mass ejection (CME) - travelling at some 1,300km per second - began arriving at Earth on Thursday morning.The last of the charged particles from the Sun will pass Earth Friday morning.
  • Thunder, lightning with hail reported in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii
