Recent World Disasters
  • Flooding In Australia
    -The Lachlan River system (Forbes), is expected to peak at about 10.65 metres today evening
    -Roads Minister Duncan Gay said heavy rain and flash flooding in Sydney is one-in a-hundred-year event
    -About 119mm of rain fell on parts of the CBD on Thursday morning
    -Trains remain suspended on the Olympic Park Line between Lidcombe and Olympic Park
    -Hundreds of boats on Sydney Harbour are in danger of sinking

  • Landslide in Likeng city of China
    -7 killed after a rain-triggered landslide in southern China
    -Total eight people were buried by the landslide but one person was rescued alive after several hours

  • M 5.8 strong earthquake in Southern Xinjiang, China (@ 36 km depth) with epicenter located 214 km SSE of Aksu. About 4,000 people will have experienced strong shaking of MMI VI. Light shaking will have felt by the people of Aral. The greater epicenter area is Taklamakan Desert.
    The Chinese Seismological Agency reports M 6.0 @ 30 km depth. The last earthquake in 2003-02-24 of M 6.3 in this region killed 261 people

  • M 5.1 moderate earthquake in Iran-Iraq Border Region (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 24 km SW Darrehshahr. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Darrehshahr and Kuhdasht. Weak shaking will have felt as far as Baghdad

  • M 4.6 shallow moderate earthquake in Philippine Islands Region (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 133 km W of Laoag. Just a weak shaking will have felt in coastal area

    M 5.3 another moderate earthquake in Mindoro, Philippines (@ 79 km depth) after 5 hours with epicenter located 73 km WSW of Batangas

    M 5.1 earthquake in Mindoro, Philippines (Verde Island Passage @ 33 km depth) with epicenter located 6 km NE Batangas. Moderate shaking of MMI V will have felt by the people of  San pascual and Batangas. Weak shaking will have felt as far as Manila

  • M 4.6 moderate very shallow earthquake in Haiti region (@ 5 km depth) with epicenter located 32 km SE from Pétionville. Light shaking  of MMI IV will have felt in Delmas, Port-au-Prince and Pétionville city of Ouest region, Haiti. In 2010 Haiti earthquake, 316,000 people died, 300,000 injured and 1,000,000 were made homeless

  • Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report (New Activity/Unrest)
    • Central Kamchatka/Bezymianny Recent Volcanic Activity: KVERT reported that during 24 February-2 March seismic activity at Bezymianny remained elevated, with about 7-19 weak events registered daily. A thermal anomaly was detected in satellite images. Gas-and-steam activity was observed on 26 February; clouds obscured the volcano on the other days. One short volcanic tremor episode was detected on 29 February. The Aviation Color Code was raised to Red
    • Chuginadak Island/Cleveland Recent Volcanic activity: AVO reported that during 24 February-2 March satellite images of Cleveland revealed no unusual activity and no significant changes in the size of the lava dome. A weak thermal anomaly was detected in satellite imagery on 3 March. The Volcano Alert Level remained at Watch and the Aviation Color Code remained at Orange
    • Sicily (Italy)/Etna Recent Volcanic activity: Sezione di Catania - Osservatorio Etneo reported that the third episode of lava fountaining from Etna's New Southeast Crater (New SEC) occurred on the morning of 4 March and was more explosive than the preceding episode. The beginning of the eruption was characterized by a rapid increase in volcanic tremor amplitude coincident with Strombolian explosions that increased in intensity and frequency
    • Kanaga/Andreanof Islands Recent Volcanic activity: AVO reported that the level of unrest at Kanaga declined to background levels. On 2 March the Volcano Alert Level was lowered to Normal and the Aviation Color Code was lowered to Green
    • Ecuador/Tungurahua Recent Volcanic Activity: IG reported that during 29 February-2 March cloud cover prevented views of Tungurahua. On 3 March seismicity increased. Clouds mostly prevented observations; during breaks in the cloud cover ash plumes were observed rising 3 km above the crater and drifting S and SW. Explosions ejected blocks that rolled down the flanks
