Recent World Disasters

Sanstorm in Turpan City, northwest China's Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region; source Xinhua

• Sandstorm in Xinjiang and Gansu province, China
  -Due to sandstorm, visibility has decreased to less than 500 meters in some areas
  -Severe wind and sand storm forecast in eastern Xinjiang, as well some areas in Gansu, Qinghai and Inner Mongolia
  -In 2010, biggest sandstorm killed atleast three people. In several parts of Gansu, like Minqin County, visibility was close to zero metre.

• M 4.6 moderate shallow earthquake in Taiwan (@ 18 km depth) with epicenter located 73 km NE of Taitung, Taiwan. Weak shaking will have felt by the people of Yuli and Yungkang

• M 6.6 strong earthquake in New Guinea, Papua New Guinea (@ 106 km depth) with epicenter located 66 km ESE of Goroka. About 69,000 people will have felt strong shaking of MMI VI. People of Goroka, Kainantu, Madang and Bulolo will have experienced moderate shaking of MMI V.  Light shaking will have felt in Lae, Kundiawa, Mount Hagen and Wewak city

• M 4.2 moderate earthquake in Southern Alaska (@ 40 km depth) with epicenter located 10 km SW from Point MacKenzie. Light to weak shaking will have felt across Anchorage and Big Lake, Alaska

• M 4.2 moderate shallow earthquake in Northern Algeria (@ 20 km depth) with epicenter located 12 km NE Mars-al-kabir. Light shaking will have felt even by the people of Wahran.

• M 5.0 moderate shallow earthquake in Guerrero, Mexico (@ 21 km depth) with epicenter located 128 km SSW of Huajuapan de Leon. It is the aftershock of yesterday M 7.4 very strong earthquake in Oaxaca, Mexico

  -Minor ash fall from Tungurahua volcano reported in nearby village (El Manzano and Choglontús)-
  -Tungurahua is one of South America's most active volcanoes

  -About 50 local roads have been damaged
  -Power cut in parts of the upper North Island
  -Ukekura Park and Brooklands Zoo remain closed
  -Another flash flood warning is issued following heavy rainfall in parts of the North Island
