Recent World Disasters

• Tornado in Dexter, State of Michigan, USA
  -Several homes destroyed
  -The tornado was on the ground for about a half hour and had a path about 10 miles long
  -There is also unconfirmed reports of tornados touching down in Monroe County's Ida Township and northwest Lapeer County, near Columbiaville
  -People needing shelter were managed in a local school nearby
  -In another news, 7 people were injured in a partial roof collapse in Kentucky
  -There were no reports of injuries or fatalities
  -Several counties in this area remain under severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings Thursday night.
  -Aside is raw video (helicopter view, by accuweather) of the aftermath of a tornado in Dexter, Michigan

• Landslide in Collingwood
  -The area is under a thunderstorm watch and heavy rainfall with possible landslide expected
  -Traffic has been closed off at Arrowhead Crescent and Arrowhead Road due to fear of landslide
  -Local residents are informed that they might have to evacuate tonight

  -Landslide has now passed over a berm. Seven families evacuated after mudslide in Alpine Private Ski Club

  -About a dozen homes could be affected by a landslide in Craigleith, near Collingwood

• M 5.7 strong shallow earthquake in Leyte, Philippines (@ 35 km depth) with epicenter located 9 km NE Tag-abaca. About 83,000 people will have felt strong shaking of MMI VI. People of Del Carmen, Surigao, Rizal, Cagdianao and Libas will have experienced strong shaking of MMI VI. Light shaking will have felt in populated area Libertad. Weak shaking will have experienced as far as Cagayan de Oro, Mandaue City, Cebu City and Mantampay. In February, extremely dangerous earthquake in Cebu killed 41+ people.

  The epicenter was located just off the coast of the southern island of Dinagat near southeastern Surigao del Norte province. No Tsunami warning issued.
• M 4.7 moderate shallow earthquake Offshore Bio-Bio, Chile (@ 23 km depth) with epicenter located 46 km W of Concepcion. Weak shaking will have felt even in Lebu, Bio-Bio, Chile

• Tropical Cyclone Lua
  -Lua is currently active in Indian Ocean approximately 375 nm northwest of Port Hedland, Australia
  -By today afternoon, it is forecast to strengthen as a Cat 2, tropical cyclone
  -By March 17, lua is forecast to strike Port Hedland as a tropical cyclone (Cat 2)

Other Disasters

• A winter storm watch is in effect for the northern Sierra from late Thursday night through Saturday afternoon. Heavy winds along with snow storm is forecast.
• Following NOAA’s annual Spring Outlook, for the first time in four years, there is no major flood risk warning in effect for any part of the United States. Ohio River Valley and parts of the Gulf Coast are the only areas with above-normal flood risks.
  More than 90% of all natural disasters in the U.S. involve flooding.
