Recent Natural Disasters
  • Flooding in Samsun, northern Turkey

    Workers trying to rescue people in a flooded basement in the Black Sea province of Samsun; Source AA
    -Nine people, including six children  reported to be killed in Samsun flooding.
    -Still one people is said to be missing in the Black Sea port city of Samsun. More than 21 are said to be injured.
    -Heavy rainfall caused Mert River to overflow. The Yılandere Bridge over Mert River collapsed due to the intensity of the water.
    -Several houses were damaged in eastern province of Erzurum too.
    -Three search and rescue helicopters currently working in the area.
    -Floods is the second most destructive natural disaster in Turkey after earthquakes. Flash flood in Turkey in 2009 killed 31 people.
  • Tornado in Alberta, Canada
    -A tornado reported about 13 kilometers south of Olds, Alta..
    -Roofs of several houses were damaged. However, no injury reported.
    -This tornado is the fourth reported tornado to hit Alberta this year.
    Update
    -Following Environment Canada, three tornadoes touched down in Saskatchewan. One was in Davidson and other two southwest of Wynyard and southwest of Watrous.
    -Tornado caused minor damage near local farm in Davidson, located about 100 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon.

  • M 5.1 moderate earthquake in Anguilla Region, Leeward Islands (@ 88 km depth) with epicenter located just 7 km ESE of Stoney Ground. It will have widely felt across Anguilla. Tremors will have even felt by the people of Netherlands Antilles, Guadeloupe, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda and Virgin Islands of the United States.

    -According to USGS felt repots, Light shaking of MMI IV was felt by the people of Basseterre, Blowing Point, Boyds, Cole Bay, East End, George Hill, Island Harbour, Low Lands, Marigot, Phillipsburg, Princess Quarter, Sandy Ground, Simpson Bay, Stoney Ground, The Bottom and The Valley. Weak shaking of MMI II-III was felt by the people of Antriol, Baie-Mahault, Bolands, Cedar Grove, Charlotte Amalie West, Cruz Bay, Gingerland, Island Harbour, Monkey Hill, Sainte-Rose, Sandy Point and Windward Side.
    -Tremors lasted for some seven seconds in St. Kitts.
  • M 4.1 light deep earthquake in Sicily, Italy (@ 159 km depth) with epicenter located 22 km NW Milazzo. Just a weak shaking of MMI III will have felt by the people of Messina.

  • M 3.5 light earthquake in Southern California (@ 8 km depth) with epicenter located just 15 km NNE from Borrego Springs. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Desert Shores, Salton Sea Beach, Escondido, Palm Springs, El Cajon, Indian Wells, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Winchester, La Mesa, Aguanga, Anza, Murrieta and San Diego.

  • M 4.7 moderate shallow earthquake in Araucania, Chile (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 19 km S of Angol. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Collipulli, Traiguen and Victoria.

  • M 3.6 light shallow earthquake in Morocco (@ 15 km depth) with epicenter located 30 km SW Zaio. Weak shaking will have felt by the people of Nador. The 1960 Agadir earthquake, most destructive and deadliest earthquake in Moroccan history, killed 15,000 people.

    -Two killed in Manila floods. A bridge reported to be collapsed.
    -Afternoon classes were suspended in Malabon, Navotas, San Juan, Pasay City, Navotas, Marikina City, Makati City, Manila, Cainta, Cavite City, Laguna, Valenzuela, Taguig, Bulacan, Parañaque, Tagaytay, Dasmariñas, Bacoor Noveleta, General Trias, Rosario, Kawit, Naic and Maragondon.

    -At least 100 people evacuated after flooding in Banaybanay town of Davao Oriental province.
  • Flooding in Kyushu island, Japan
    -About 25,000 people evacuated due to threats of landslides or flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Kyushu island of Japan.

  • Tropical Depression Four-E
    -As of 15:00 UTC, TD Four-E was located 720 km SSW of Manzanillo, Mexico.
    - The depression could become a tropical storm later today.

Natural Disaster News
  • Lightning in Mumbai, India
    -Lightning struck Mumbai-bound Boeing 737 carrying 99 passengers.
    -It caused total radio-communication failure and pilot immediately conduct an emergency landing.
    -No damage or injury reported.
  • Climate change in Kiribati
    -
    Kiribati is planning to move the entire population to Vanau Levu, Fiji in order to avoid rising sea levels.
    -If sea levels continue to rise at current rate, by 2100, the entire nation is said to be submerged.
    -Kiribati is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean.
  • Solar flare to hit Earth today
    -A powerful solar flare (sun storm) that occurred on July 2 is said to reach the Earth today (July 4).
    -This solar flare is registered as a class M 5.6 solar storm (From three class X-strong, M-moderate and C-weak). X-class solar storms are capable of damaging satellites and damage power lines on Earth. Click for detail report on Solar flares 2012.
