Recent Natural Disasters

  • Very strong earthquake in Northern Italy
    -M 5.8 very strong shallow aftershocks shakes Northern Italy (Medolla) with epicenter located 40 km NNW of Bologna and 150 km SE Milan.
    -This aftershocks was as strong as earlier M 5.9 main shocks on May 20. Seven people were killed in that quake.
    -People of San Felice sul Panaro, Camposanto, Medolla, Mirandola, Cavezzo and San Prospero will have felt very strong shakng of MMMI VII. Light shaking was felt in Bologna and Venice. People of Milano, Florence and Trento reported a weak shaking.
    -Earthquake tremor was also felt in Rome.
    -Subduction of the Mediterranean Sea floor beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea at the Calabrian subduction zone causes a significant zone of seismicity around Sicily and southern Italy. Active volcanoes are located above intermediate depth earthquakes in the Cyclades of the Aegean Sea and in southern Italy.
    -An earthquake of approximately M 8.0 near Sicily in 1693 generated a large tsunami wave that destroyed numerous towns along Sicily's east coast. Click here for detail report on this Italian quake
    Update

    -Two factories in the cities of Mirandola and Medolla reported to be collapsed.
    -More than 5,000 people evacuated. Some buildings and schools evacuated in Milan too.
    -Some train lines in the impacted areas were suspended to check the stability of the infrastructures.
    -The earthquake tremor was even felt in Switzerland, Netherlands, Slovenia, Liechtenstein, Austria, France and Croatia.
  • Wild fire in Gila National Forest, New Mexico
    -Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire has burned nearly 133,000 acres.
    -At least 13 houses reported to be destroyed.
    -Bearwallow Mountain Lookout Cabins and Shed, historic sites, are at high risk in fire.
    -Campsites and recreational areas closed.
    -Fire is expected to be fully contained in more than two weeks because of the strong wind gusts and lack of heavy rains.

    -Light shaking was felt for "just a couple of seconds" at the National Weather Service's Oxnard office.
    -No any damage or injury report received by The Los Angeles Fire Department .
  • M 4.5 moderate shallow earthquake in Bulgaria (@ 8 km depth) today with epicenter located just 23 km W of Sofia. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Blagoevgrad and Sofia. 50 injured in earlier Pernik-Sofia, Bulgaria earthquake.

  • M 3.7 light shallow earthquake in Tamaulipas, Mexico (@ 132 km depth) with epicenter located 61km E of Linares. Weak skaing will have felt by the people of San Fernando, Jimenez and Montemorelos, Mexico. Located atop three of the large tectonic plates, Mexico is one of the world's most seismologically active regions.

  • M 5.9 strong deep harmless sea quake south of Fiji Islands (@ 605 km depth) with epicenter located 171km (106mi) SSW of Ndoi Island. North of New Zealand, the Australia-Pacific boundary stretches east of Tonga and Fiji to 250 km south of Samoa.

  • M 5.7 strong shallow harmless sea quake in Komandorskiye Ostrova, Russia (@ 37 km depth) with epicenter located 207 km ESE of Nikol'skoye.

  • Colombia/Nevado del Ruiz volcano recent volcanic activity
    -Ash fall reported in the towns of Anserma, Aranzazu, Apia, Belen, Balboa, Chinchiná Dosquebradas, Philadelphia, Guatica, Celia, La Merced, La Virginia, Manila, Marseille, Marmato, Mistrató, Neira, Palestine, Pereira, Pueblo Rico, Quinchia, Risaralda, Salamis, San José de Caldas, Santagueda, Santa Rosa de Cabal, Shrine, Supia, Villamaría and Viterbo.
    -Alert level raised from yellow to orange.
    -The last eruption of the volcano in 1985 killed an estimated 25,000 people and destroyed the town of Armero.

  • Thunder Bay Floods, Canada
    -Heavy flooding in Thunder Bay of Ontario, Canada with after 100 mm of rain fell on the city over the weekend.
    -A state of emergency declared for Conmee Township and the Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge.

  • Flooding in Louisville, Kentucky
    -Morning and afternoon classes canceled after flooding in at the University of Louisville's Belknap campus.
    -Several parked vehicles along Brook Street get damaged.

Tropical Cyclone List
  • Tropical Depression Beryl
    -As of 15: 00 UTC, Beryl was located 185 km WSW of Savannah Georgia and 85 km NNE of Valdosta Georgia.
    -Beryl is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in eastern

  • Hailstorms in Wellington, New Zealand
    -Three minor crashes reported due to hailstorms in Wellington.
    -There were no reports of injuries from the accidents in Wellington.
    -These freaky hailstorms were caused by the presence of "big fluffy cumulus clouds", a mixture of hot and cold air and the right amount of moisture in the air.
  • Heat wave in Lahore, Pakistan
    -43 degrees Celsius temperature recorded in Lahore in last 24 hours.
    -Excessive heat also in Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab.
    -Weather is expected to get more hot and dry in the next few days in Lahore. Temperature expected to reach 48 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius in some areas.
  • Natural disasters cost Canadian manufacturers billions of dollars in lost production
    Canadian manufacturers experienced somewhere between $3 billion to $5 billion in lost production as a result of natural disasters such as Japan and Thailand in 2011.
