Recent World Disasters

  • Deadly Flood in South Eastern Brazil (UPDATED 1/7/2012)
    -1500 people lost their home, 3,400 people houses partially or totally destroyed and 205 bridges destroyed
    -4,000 people evacuated from nearby the town of Campos do Goytacazes yesterday after flooding on the Muriae River

    -Flooding and mudslides in Minas Gerais state killed 8 people and displaced at least 10,000 people.
    -HIGH ALERT for the entire state of Rio de Janeiro for the occurrence of more rain during the weekend
    -Residents of the city of Guidoval in forest area of ​​Minas Gerais, are isolated because of rain. A river flooded, bridges down, destroyed homes and swept cars which can be seen in the video aside (Category under "Natural Disasters in Brazil")

  • M 4.6 moderate very shallow (@ 7 km depth) earthquake in Patrai, Greece. Pople of Thérmon, Naúpaktos and Pátrai will have experienced moderate shaking. It will be faintly felt as far as Zakynthos, Larisa and Athens

  • M 5.4 moderate earthquake in Papua New Guinea with epicenter located 66 km W of least populated area of Madang, New Guinea (@ 59 km depth). People of Madang will have experienced moderate shaking and weakly felt in Port moresby area.

  • M 4.0 very shallow earthquake in Iran (@ 2 km depth) with epicenter located 30 km SE of Azad shahr, Iran near to Khar Turan National Park. Weak shaking will have experienced in Gonbad-e qabus region of Iran

  • M 5.6 moderate deep (@ 132 km depth) earthquake harmless earthquake in Halmahera, Indonesia. About 272,000 people people would have felt light shaking of MMI IV. People of Tobelo will have experienced light shaking and weak shaking will be experienced in populated area of Ternate, Indonesia

    Timisoara (Romania): It was early in the saturday morning. It was for a short time interval (about 1 to 3 sec). Heard and felt like somebody with heavy bodyweight was running in the suite above (at the next floor). No electric appliances where out of function (like TV or PC). Them where running absolutely normal. In the silence of the morning was a scary rumbling noise and shaking.
  • M 5.3 deep moderate earthquake very far (329 km ) from populated area of  Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia (@ 106 km depth). It will just be faintly felt in Enarotali and Nabire area

  • Laguna del Maule Volcano of Chile as seen from Space
    -In the image, as seen from space (satellite image), vegetated areas range in color from red to pink, snow is white, water is black, and bare rock is earth-toned
    -Following volcanolive, Laguna del Maule Volcano
    consists of stratovolcanoes, lava domes, pyroclastic cones. Laguna del Maule volcanic complex covers 300 sq km near the Chile-Argentina border, east of Nevados de Longavi volcano. In this region Andean volcanoes are ~ 90 km above the Benioff zone
  • Spain/El Hierro Recent Volcanic Activity
    -Increase in seismic tremor at the
    El Hierro Volcano
    -El Hierro is showing renewed vigor
    -Sea surface is steaming
    -New pyroclastic chunks (the “coconuts”) have been spotted
  • Chile / Lascar Recent Volcanic Activity
    -ALERT LEVEL YELLOW

  • Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report (New Activity/Unrest)
    • Central Chile / Callaqui Recent Volcanic Activity: Based on a pilot observation, the Buenos Aires VAAC reported that the top of an ash plume from Callaqui was at 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l. on 2 January. Ash was not detected in satellite imagery under clear skies
    • Chuginadak Island / Cleveland Recent Volcanic Activity: AVO reported that an ash cloud from Cleveland rose to an altitude of 4.6 km (15,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 80 km ESE on 29 December. AVO raised the Volcano Alert Level to Watch and the Aviation Color Code to Orange. During 30 December-3 January there were no new signs of explosive activity; the Volcano Alert Level was lowered to Advisory and the Aviation Color Code to Yellow on 30 December
    • Colombia / Galeras Recent Volcanic Activity: INGEOMINAS reported that activity continued at Galeras during 28 December- 3 January, with steam rising from the main crater and two craters to the N and SW (Paisita and Chavas, respectively)
    • Halmahera / Gamalama Recent Volcanic Activity: According to news articles, at least three people were killed and 1,000-2,600 more from several villages were displaced by lahars from Gamalama during on 27-28 December. The lahars destroyed many homes in the Tubo and Tofure villages and along the Togorara and Marikurubu rivers. The Alert Level remains at 3 (on a scale from 1-4)
    • Lomblen Island (Indonesia) / Lewotolo Recent Volcanic Activity: CVGHM reported that white plumes rose 50-250 m above the summit of Lewotolo during the month of December. Seismicity increased on 31 December and intensified on 2 January, the same day incandescence was observed. Based on visual and seismic observations, CVGHM raised the Alert Level from 1 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 2 January, then later that day raised the Alert Level to 3
    • Ecuador / Tungurahua Recent Volcanic Activity: IG reported moderate seismic activity at Tungurahua during 28 December-3 January. On 31 December small steam emissions were observed, and on 3 January a gas-and-steam plume rose 200 m above the crater. Ash-fall from last week's explosions accumulated to a depth of 2-4 mm in villages to the SW
